History of Veerashaiva Lingayat Community:
Veerashaiva Lingayat is a community having roots in Karnataka of South India. The terms Veerashaiva and Lingayat are used synonymously. Veershaiva Lingayat community people worship Lord Shiva. They form one of biggest communities in Karnataka and spread through Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra states. Lingayatism was founded by Basava in the 12th century and later propagated by Basava’s followers called “Sharanas”. Lingayatism prospered during Vijayanagara Empire and played a major role in the expansion leading to mighty Vijayanagara Empire. There are notable people from Lingayat population in the fields of arts, science, and politics. Former chief minister of Karnataka Yedyurappa belongs to Veerashaiva Lingayat community.
